“This effect only occurs when a reduced caloric intake occurs in parallel, but with 2 eggs and the usual diet, no pounds can be lost.” The study was conducted with 152 women and men between 25 and 60 years, who had a body mass index between 25 and 50 kg per m². The body mass index – or BMI – represents the ratio of body weight to the square of body size and is a common measure for body filling.

The subjects were divided into 4 groups: 2 groups ate for breakfast either 2 eggs or a pastry from yeast dough, a so-called bagel. The two eggs together had the same calorie count as the bagel (340 kilocalories (Kcal)). In addition, one of the eggs and one of the bagel group carried out a reduction diet, in which they absorbed about 1000 kcal less than usual. The other two groups fed on as usual.

Eight weeks later the success of the group, which was calorie-reduced and nourished with breakfast-eaters, was greatest. In this group the BMI decreased by 61%, the weight by 65%, the abdominal circumference by 34% and the body fat percentage by 16% more strongly than in the group with bagel and reduction diet. No differences were observed between the two groups, which were not calorie-reduced but differing in breakfast.

Also, there was no difference in fat and cholesterol in the blood of the participants. “Apparently, boiled eggs are good to promote weight loss as part of a calorie-reduced diet,” Dr. King. “According to the researchers, the effect is probably due to the long-term saturation of eggs, which helps people to eat less at the next meal.”
